What can you do today to keep grief from making tomorrow’s most difficult decisions?
In Part 2 of “Don’t Leave Grief in Charge,” Florence G. Haley continues her conversation with Alfred George, founder and owner of Family Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service.
Alfred explains the practical differences among preplanning, prearranging, and prefunding a funeral, including how life insurance may be used to cover final expenses. He also discusses what families should ask when choosing a funeral service provider and why the quality of care matters just as much as the products and services selected.
For listeners who feel overwhelmed, Alfred offers three simple places to begin: decide how you want to be remembered, write down and communicate your wishes, and learn about the funeral service providers available in your community.
The conversation closes with a powerful reflection on legacy—not simply as the wealth or possessions we leave behind, but as what our lives deposit into others.
Planning cannot remove the pain of losing someone we love, but it can give our families clarity, freedom, and peace when they need it most.
Grief is heavy enough. Don’t leave it in charge.

What happens when a family is forced to make important decisions while overwhelmed by grief?
In Part 1 of “Don’t Leave Grief in Charge,” Florence G. Haley speaks with Alfred George, founder and owner of Family Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service, about the confusion, conflict, and financial pressure families can face when a loved one’s final wishes have not been discussed.
Alfred explains the differences among preplanning, prearranging, and prefunding and shares how preparation gives families the freedom to make thoughtful decisions rather than choices driven by urgency, guilt, or uncertainty. He also offers three practical steps listeners can take now: decide how you want to be remembered, communicate your wishes to someone you trust, and learn about the funeral service providers available in your community.
This compassionate conversation reminds us that planning ahead is not simply about preparing for death; it is an act of love that gives our families clarity, dignity, and peace when they need it most.
Grief is heavy enough. Don’t leave it in charge.

The Season 1 episodes of Past to Posterity connect the podcast’s opening themes—intentional legacy and honest conversations about faith, money, and responsibility—to the economic choices families make.
The episode’s central message is that Black buying power is important, but it is not the same as wealth. Buying power measures how much money people can spend, while wealth reflects what they own, control, grow, protect, and transfer to future generations.
The episode challenges listeners with a defining question:
If your grandchildren inherited your spending habits instead of your paycheck, would they become wealthy?
It introduces seven financial concepts that families must understand: income, spending, assets, ownership, equity, businesses, and investments. The opening discussion focuses on income, explaining that earning more does not automatically create wealth. Income flows into a household, but wealth accumulates through saving, investing, acquiring assets, building equity, protecting property, and reducing debt.
Listeners are encouraged to give their income a “legacy assignment” by asking:
The broader call is for Black families to convert more of their economic power from consumption into ownership, investments, businesses, equity, security, and systems that allow the next generation to begin from a stronger position.
The episode also previews practical ways to support Black-owned businesses during Black Business Month and announces an upcoming temporary podcast pause while Ms. Florence G. focuses on other projects.
